General Information

  • The Canon printers are multi-function devices that allow you to print, copy, scan, and email a document.
  • All of these devices are connected to the campus network. A print job can be sent as described below and then released at any of the Canon printers.
  • To use the devices, the user must have a valid Carthage username and password.
  • A valid Carthage ID card will allow a user to swipe in, making printing and copying simpler.
  • Wifi printers are not allowed and will not function on campus.
  • Faculty and staff are assigned a department to which printing/copying is automatically billed.
  • The costs of printing are as follows:
    • Black/white single-sided: $.05 per page
    • Black/white double-sided: $.08 per page
    • Color: $.38 per side (Color is available on a specific printer in the library and in the mailroom.)

All members of the Carthage Community may use the Canon all-in-one printers located across campus. These printers may be found in the following locations:

Hedberg Library

One color printer and two black and white printers are located on the upper level of the library.

Lentz Hall

  • 2nd floor: One black-and-white printer is in the hallway outside Rm. 235.
  • 3rd floor: One black-and-white printer is on the south part of the third floor on the lake side.
  • 4th floor: One black-and-white printer is on the fourth floor in the lake side hallway.

Straz

One black-and-white printer is located in the second-floor lobby on the northeast corner of Straz, near the elevator.

Todd Wehr Center

One black-and-white printer is located in the lobby on the western side of TWC.

The Tower

Two black-and-white printers are located in the Tower in front of the Residential Life office.

Mailroom

Printing on non-standard paper (resume, card stock, labels, odd size paper, etc.) or large amounts (50+ pages) should be taken to the Campus Mailroom.

The Carthage College Mailroom in Lentz Hall, room 103 can print and copy special projects. The mailroom provides additional services such as stapling, colored or special paper, booklets, etc.

The Mailroom has a walk-up Canon copier/printer that is the same as any other copier/printer on campus. It is open for all to use with their Carthage credentials, costs the same as the other all-in-one machines on campus, and the cost is deducted from the user’s departmental account. See the Mailroom Services webpage for further information on available services.

Carthage encourages paperless communication of all kinds and provides technologies to facilitate electronic document sharing and storage. The cost of printing and copying on campus directly competes with funding for other resources such as research assets, technology, infrastructure, and much more. By printing less, each person is helping Carthage to not only be greener and better stewards of the environment but are also helping us to reduce costs so we can provide better resources for the education of our community. Please visit this page on Sustainability at Carthage for more information. If you have questions or ideas about going paperless in your classes, your office, or any other context, please contact Carol Sabbar (csabbar@gxitma.net) about options and tools.

For Faculty & Staff

All Carthage faculty and staff are assigned a departmental cost center. When an employee logs in to any printer on campus, that cost center will be applied to their print or copy job. If a user is associated with more than one department, they will have the option to choose a cost center that applies to this particular print job. All printing is then paid for by each campus department. Costs per page are the same as those listed above. Printing in the mailroom costs less, and any print or copy job over 50 pages should be taken there. Printing on non-standard paper (resume, card stock, labels, odd sizes, etc.) should also be done in the mailroom.

Email Your Print Job

Send an email to printing@gxitma.net from your Carthage email account with the document you want printed as an attachment in the email. Make sure that the document is formatted as 8 1/2” x 11” (letter). Release your print job at the printer. Shared printers are set up to print in black and white, double-sided as default.

Faculty and staff will need to wait for a return email from PaperCut and to click on the emailed link for the print job to be billed to the correct department.

WEB PRINT (AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS ONLY)

You may print from the PaperCut WebPrint interface. Log in with your Carthage username and password (this option is only available on-campus). In the Web Print menu on the left, attach a document, or drag and drop a document in the window. You will be able to set print options, see your printing account balance, and send print jobs from this interface. Please see this document for further instructions on using Web Print at Carthage.

PAPERCUT CLIENT

Faculty and staff with Carthage-owned computers may want to have the PaperCut Client installed on their machines to print directly from all software platforms to the shared multi-function printers. All newly deployed fac/staff computers will have the PaperCut client installed. Please email help@gxitma.net to request the client on your computer.

  • Choose a printer from the software print options menu:
    • Black and white, double-sided printing (default): CarthagePrint-Public on PAPERCUT
    • Black and white, single-sided printing: CarthagePrint-Public-Single on PAPERCUT

SCANNING

One of the options on the Canon all-in-one printers is to “Scan and Send.” Choosing this option from the main menu screen on the printer will allow the user to scan documents and send them to a specified email address as a PDF attachment. Once you log in to the printer, choosing “Send to Myself” in the Scan screen will automatically send the document to your Carthage email address. There is no cost associated with scanning, but one does need a Carthage username and password to log in to the machine.

PLEASE NOTE SCANNING LIMITS: Limit scanned files to 50 pages or less at 300x300 dpi if using the feeder, and no more than 10 pages if scanning from the glass.

OFFICE PRINTING

Printers for individual faculty are generally discouraged and are not supported by Library and Information Services. Any individual printer deemed absolutely necessary must be maintained at the department’s expense per the following guidelines:

  • Must be USB-attached to the individual PC.
  • Will not be connected to the College network.
  • Will not be connected through wifi and will not emit a wifi signal.
  • Must be tagged as a Carthage-owned asset.

LIS does not provide assistance with ordering, setting up, connecting, re-connecting, or troubleshooting individual printers. Purchasing advice is available by contacting CDWG and asking for pricing for Carthage College. CDWG will bill your department directly. Some hardware repair and troubleshooting is provided by Environmental Innovations (www.4anyprinter.com) as long as the device meets the following requirements:

  • Hewlett Packard (HP) brand
  • Laser (not Inkjet) technology
  • Uses replacement toner cartridges from Environmental Innovations

LAB PRINTING

Some labs on campus may have printers associated with them, and printing to those devices is generally restricted and regulated by the department that maintains the lab. Likewise, printing to shared office printers other than the Canon devices is restricted and regulated by the offices that maintain them.

Please email help@gxitma.net if you have any questions.

For Students

Students receive $100 in a printing credit each year, allowing for up to 2,000 double-sided pages to be printed free of charge.

INDIVIDUAL PRINTERS

Students at Carthage may bring their own printers to campus, but they may NOT use wifi or emit a wireless signal of any kind. Please make sure that any printer you bring to campus either does not have wifi or can have its wifi signal turned off. The wireless printer will not work on our network and the wifi signal those machines emit negatively affect the network performance.

Student organizations may request a print card to be used by the members of that organization. These requests should be completed by the person who will take responsibility for the card. LIS will provide that person with a card and an ID number to use when printing. That person may allow users in the organization to borrow that card at their own discretion. The organization will be billed for printing and copying.

Please use this Copy Print Card Request Form to ask for a student organization print card. You will be required to log in with your Carthage credentials. Please allow up to seven business days for the creation of your card.

The organizational card allows for printing from Carthage computers (e.g. library computers) and copying at any of the copier/printers. The card must be present to use the copier/printers. The card does not enable printing via email or from personal computers.

If your card is lost or you forget your assigned ID number, please email help@gxitma.net immediately to obtain a replacement card.

For Guests: Printing, Copying, & Scanning

Guests are by definition people that do not have Carthage credentials and therefore cannot log in to print or copy. Guest may ONLY use the copier/printers located in the library. To do so, they must request a copy card from the Library Information Desk and pay for the copies they make in cash at the following rates:

  • Black and white: $.10 per page
  • Color: $.25 per page

Carthage alumni are regarded as guests and are required to pay at the rates above.

Those invited to campus for conferences are regarded as guests. If you are on campus for a conference, camp, or event, please contact Meggan Mazanet about copying and printing.

For more information on guest services at Hedberg Library, see our Guest Use Policy. Please email help@gxitma.net if you have any questions.
